Styropack UK has been registered as an accredited reprocessor by the Environment Agency.
Styropack can issue PERNs, (Packaging Export Recovery Notes), for each tonne of compacted EPS seed trays sent to Holland to be reprocessed by sister company Synbra Technology.
Since launching this recycling scheme in August 2005 Styropack has sent 130 tonnes of EPS seed trays to be recycled. They are recycled into a reprocessed grade that can be added into prime material that is used to manufacture items like coat hangers, picture frames and disposable cameras.
"We take used seed trays from ten of our horticulture customers for recycling. This helps them to fulfil both their own environmental requirements and those of their customers.
"One customer, Roundstone Nurseries, supplies B&Q and the team there is really pleased that our recycling scheme has helped it to meet the exacting environmental standards set by B&Q," explains Jan Clarke, HSE Manager, Styropack.
"The scheme has been very successful and we are really pleased to have won accreditation so we can issue PERNs to offset against our liability under the Packaging Waste Directive," adds Clarke.
