Styropack Aberdeen Provides EPS Recycling Service

On 21 January 2011 Dame Anne Begg MP, opened an EPS (expanded polystyrene) recycling point at Styropack Aberdeen.

Dame Anne said, "Like many people, I was under the impression that polystyrene could not be recycled as it doesn't feature at any of the recycling points across the city.

"However, I was delighted to learn that it is possible to recycle polystyrene and for the first time in Aberdeen households have somewhere to deposit their polystyrene.  Before there was no option but to throw out polystyrene packaging with general waste."

EPS is generally known as the polystyrene packaging that is used to protect goods on their journey to customers' homes. It is often used to protect and insulate items ranging from fresh or frozen food to wide screen televisions.

Once the packaging has done its job it is usually thrown away, but now it can be recycled by the people of Aberdeen.

"Styropack is pleased to be able to provide this service. We support and encourage the recycling of used EPS (expanded polystyrene) packaging", explains Mike Pocock, Group Sales Manager.

EPS packaging is 100% recyclable; it is a valuable resource that can be re-used and thousands of tonnes of EPS are recycled each year by businesses in the UK.

Unfortunately, local authorities do not recycle EPS, so there are few places in the country where householders can take their used EPS to be recycled. Now, thanks to Styropack, Aberdeen is one of them.

Styropack is being supported in this initiative by the quality butcher, Donald Russell. EPS boxes ensure that Donald Russell products arrive in customers' homes all over the UK in perfect condition, protected from damage and insulated against temperature change.

Donald Russell has many customers in the Aberdeen area and will be informing them about this new opportunity to put their used boxes to good use.

All the EPS boxes or packaging deposited at Styropack will be recycled; clean EPS will be re-ground and used again in new boxes being moulded by Styropack. EPS that is unclean or contaminated by other materials will be sent to Styropack's sister company Jablite in Howden to be recycled into insulation board.
