EPS and The Environment
Manufacturing EPS Packaging
- The manufacture of EPS packaging is a low-pollution process, steam is used and Styropack re-uses the water many times
- Styropack has invested in some of the world's most advanced, energy-efficient machines
- No waste EPS is generated in the manufacturing process; all rejects or cut-off material are shredded and re-used
- No CFC's or HCFC's are used in the manufacture of EPS packaging
- Pentane is used as the blowing agent. Pentane has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of zero and the EU registers Pentane as a non-hazardous substance to human health and the environment
- Styrene, used in the manufacture of EPS, occurs naturally in many familiar products including coffee beans, beer, wine, strawberries, nuts and cinnamon
- Styropack's site in Blackburn has achieved ISO 14001 status, the international standard for environmental management systems
EPS is 98% air
This makes it:
- A uniquely resource-efficient packaging material with a low carbon footprint
- The most lightweight packaging material available, which helps to reduce fuel consumption in the supply chain
RECYCLING OR RE-USING EPS
- Thousands of tonnes of EPS are recycled by businesses in the UK every year. EPS is recycled into items such as, replacement hardwood decking or garden furniture, coat hangers and disposable cameras
- Currently it is difficult for householders to recycle EPS because Local Authorities do not collect it. EPS can be safely re-used in many ways. Some suggestions are:
- Break up old EPS pieces or seed trays into large chunks and use it to assist drainage in plant pots and window boxes in your garden. It works just like broken terracotta with the added benefit that it provides insulation and stops your pots freezing solid in the winter
- Use an old EPS box for your seedlings. Simply drill a few holes for drainage, put in your compost and plant your seeds. It makes a perfect growing environment
- A clean EPS box can be usefully employed to store items in the loft, providing protection for valuable items
EPS IN LANDFILL
- If EPS is put into landfill, it is inert and innocuous
- EPS provides stability in landfill because it does not biodegrade and leach chemicals into the water system or gases into the air that could contribute to global warming
